Convex Ground Japanese Hair Shears

This pair of convex ground hair shears (shown below) was abused by a "sharpener" or better called "grinder". The unsuspecting owner of these shears hired a bad sharpener who used a "grinding wheel" to sharpen her shears.
This "sharpener" destroyed the factory ground convex shape that these shears came new with when new. He converted these convex shears into beveled edge shears. Beveled edged shears are not convex ground shears and this conversion is unacceptable.
This type of poor sharpening job is a very common problem that stylists run into when employing a sharpener. They trust the individual to sharpen their very expensive hair shears only to find out that the sharpener removes approximately 60% from the life of their shears. This can, and does, happen with only one bad sharpening job.
In the case of these shears, we were hired to repair them to the best that they can be repaired. We were able to make them cut very good again, but, the metal has already been lost and with it so goes a good portion of service life. This is an unfortunate situation that is all too common. The owner of these shears will now be retiring them to "back-up" duty.
See the pictures below for before and after shots....
BEFORE:
The blades have been ground incorrectly. They have been transformed into a semi-beveled shape. The angles are all wrong and cause the hair to be pushed out of the shears during the cut.

The inside ride lines are almost non-existent, there is an undesireable (dirty) coating on the inside of the blades, and the hollow is almost flat.
It's hard to see in this picture but the top blade has a step ground into the edge.

AFTER:
Here you can see that we re-established the ride lines, re-hollowed the inside of the blades, and corrected/removed the step from the blades edge.

BEFORE:
The blade has been ground completely wrong. It has a very obvious step ground into in the edge and a semi-beveled edge has been applied. This is shear sharpening at it's worst.

AFTER:
The step (in the edge) has been elimated and the blade has been returned to it's original factory designed convex shape.

Here's the view of the shears assembled and ready to be returned to the customer.

We do not use "grinding" machines to sharpen and/or repair hair shears. We shape and hone the shears' blades using the "Advanced Hamaguri Sharpening System" as well as the finest Japanese waterstones available. Quality of service is our number one goal. We don't chase quantity and we never settle for second best.
We believe that this is what separates us from our peers.
